The most important part of the technique, while doing barbell bench press is to maintain a proper grip. You will have to make sure that the weights you use are well-balanced, and also that you place your hands at the appropriate distance, so that none of the hands is over worked. Before you start performing the exercise make sure that the bar is positioned above the eyes and that the back and buttocks are placed firmly on the bench. Also ensure that the feet are placed flat on the floor. Place your hands at the center of the bar and maintain a little more than shoulder width distance between your hands.
The use of dumbbells provides a compound exercise, and other muscles like the triceps and shoulder muscles are also involved in the movement. This movement helps to strengthen the stabilizer muscles, and a dumbbell in each hand will also improve your coordination. On the contrary, while using barbells, the stabilizer muscles will not be actively involved. However, this allows you to bench press heavy weights.
Due to this reason many people tend to overdo their workout routine and lift very heavy weights too soon. The implications of this are serious injuries, greater exhaustion, and longer periods of time for recuperation. Hence, it is necessary that one should slowly and steadily build up the intensity and weights of the bench press. The best routines are those which are gradually developed over a period of time and start showing their effects after a few weeks or months.
